The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra’s Al Encuentro con Venezuela Tour closed in Maracaibo, state of Zulia, last Friday, January 29, after playing in many cities of the country. The concert aimed at collecting food, clothes, potable water and food for Haiti earthquake victims Over 25,000 people attended the concert at the Luis Aparicio Montiel Stadium in Maracaibo that started at 18:30 local time. Zagalines del Padre Vilchez, Quinto Criollo, Vocal Sound, and the flute player Huáscar Barradas are among the artists who lent their talent to this benefit concert. Antonín Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Richard Wagner’s Rienzi Overture, Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony N° 4 and 1812 Overture were among the works performed by the SBYOV as well as Pérez Prado’s Mambo and José Terenzio’s Aires de Venezuela that were requested by the audience. The SBYOV shared the stage with musicians of El Sistema’s local orchestras. A special mention deserves the 13-year-old cellist Enmanuel Acurero, who moved the audience with Antonín Dvorak’s Concerto for cello and orchestra. Honoris causa degree Earlier that day, Gustavo Dudamel received an honoris causa degree from the Universidad del Zulia for his career achievements. View photo gallery in Picasa Web Albums. Gustavo Dudamel expressed his gratitude and dedicated it to all El Sistema’s musicians. “We can understand each other through music, and an orchestra is the best example of that. (…) war is not the answer because this is a country full of hope, and is built by all of us. For that reason, peace, love and tolerance are what we need”, he added.
