Gustavo Dudamel: a conducting career in the ascendant

Gustavo Dudamel displays his talent all around the world, and by doing so he also displays the talent of Venezuela's people. His career was boosted in 2004 when he won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition.

Since then, Gustavo Dudamel – whose career was launched in El Sistema, under the guidance of maestro José Antonio – has become a much sought-after conductor by the world’s top orchestras, and a leading figure in the world of music.

From August to December, Gustavo Dudamel – Music Director of the LA Phil, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra – will give 31 concerts in five countries with five different orchestras.

From August 1 to 3, Dudamel and the LA Phil will be together at the Hollywood Bowl to perform three concerts: Dudamel conducts Bizet’s Carmen (August 1), accompanied by the Venezuelan soprano Mariana Ortiz who will play the role of Frasquita; Dudamel conducts Gershwin and Bernstein with the renowned Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero as guest soloist (August 3); and Dudamel conducts Bolero (August 5).

The very same month he will visit Venezuela to give concerts and conduct seminars for the El Sistema’s orchestras.

On September 2, 3, and 4, Dudamel will be in Sweden to conduct the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's Sixth Symphony. Fifteen days later, he will perform two concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Lucerne Festival.

The first 20 days of October, the Venezuelan conductor will be performing with the LA Phil at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, accompanied (on October 7) by the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flores.  Later, the Music Director of the Gothenburg Symphony will conduct concerts featuring Emanuel Ax, Jean Yves Thibaudet, and Cynthia Millar.

From October 29 to November 18, Dudamel will lead once more George Bizet’s Carmen, but this time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

On November 25 and 26, Dudamel and the Gothenburg Symphony will perform works by Igor Stravinsky, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern.

In December, he will give three concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, considered one of the world’s top orchestras by Gramophone Magazine. Then, he will be in Berlin; and subsequently he will embark on a concert tour with the LA Phil that includes Spain, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom and France.
